The Most Popular Online Survey Scams
Currently, there are over 500 online survey companies. A lot of them aren't really legitimate ways to make money. However, a few of them can earn you some quick cash. A lot of these companies target stay at home moms. They want to make a few extra dollars while taking care of the kids. They also seek out the unemployed who want to make a few extra dollars because of their financial situation. The elderly that has internet access and teenagers who have little else to do are also prime targets. And let's not forget the very greedy people who think they can get rich by answering a few simple questions and want to make money doing little.
These people are prey to unethical webmasters used by some online survey companies. The typical scams may include the following :
1. The fee for joining.
There are some sites out there who charge a "fee" to join. They will promise you an opportunity to earn up to $100,000 a year, sitting home at your computer taking surveys. The fee is usually less than $50. These sites are almost always a scam. If it was possible to earn $100,000 a year taking surveys, I wouldn't be writing this. I'd be online taking surveys! And so would most everyone else. It's just not possible to make this kind of money taking paid surveys. These sites prey on the uneducated, the elderly, and plain old people who just don't know any better. When they finally figure out that their "get rich quick" scheme isn't working, they're out the fee they paid to join. The downside to this is the fact that although these sites walk a very fine line between being legal and not being legal, they know what they are doing, and protect themselves from litigation. There are always "disclaimers" stating that not everyone will earn the amount of cash as promised. Actually, they promise nothing. These sites will include testimonials from people with no last names who claim to be living in the lap of luxury, getting rich working from their own home. The websites almost always have photos of huge houses and luxury vacations on their websites. This type of site should be avoided at all cost. PT Barnum was right when he said that there was a sucker born every minute. And that is why these sites are still online, making money not for you, but for the savvy website owner/
2. The cell phone scam
This popular scam will ask for your cell phone number to "confirm" your membership. Very quickly, you will get a call on your cell phone. Depending on the company, this call will end up costing anywhere from $1.95 to $4.95. These companies will never charge you too much for the cell phone call because they figure you'll never miss a few dollars or even check you cell phone bill closely. It always adds up for the company. They then send you text messages periodically telling you you've won a prize. To claim it, all you need to do is simply reply to the text. This will end up costing you more money. Never give out your cell phone number to any website.
3. The Switcheroo
Here is how this scam works. You participate in the survey, and are then directed to another website, where you are presented with a lot of "offers". You are given the opportunity to say "yes" or "no", but as long as you keep saying "no" the offers never end until you finally give up and say "yes". Although this scam usually doesn't cost you money, your time is wasted by being on the site. If you finally say "yes" to something such as health insurance, prepare to receive about 10 phone calls every week trying to sell you health insurance. The insurance these telemarketers are trying to sell will cost you a lot more than you can expect to pay from a local insurance agent. Count on the telemarketing company asking you for both your social security number as well as your bank information. Their excuse is they need to end in a deposit along with your application. Never, ever give this information out over the phone. If the company is legitimate, they will send you any information you require by mail.
4. The phone bill scam
You sign up at an online survey company and provide your telephone number. You complete the survey, and at the end are given the option to sign up for a free magazine. Everyone likes free, so you go ahead and sign up. The company asks for your name and address for the magazine. Most people never notice that a fee for the subscription is added on to their phone bill. Reading their terms of service, however, shows you that when you provided the company with your name and address to receive your "free" magazine, you actually authorized them to bill you by way of your telephone bill. Telephone bills are so high today that few people notice a $12.95 charge for a magazine subscription.
I've shown you just four of the scams that I've encountered during my experiences with the world of online survey participation. I think I am pretty smart, but I've been stung on several of these scams. I ended up paying $89.95 for software that I thought I was getting for free. I didn't do my due diligence, and the experience cost me. I've also been called about 20 times so far by different "health insurance" company representatives who requested my social security number and bank information over the telephone. I have yet to receive anything through the mail from them. At least I had the good sense not to give them vital information such as my social security number and bank information over the phone.
Taking Online surveys can be rewarding, but you must make sure you always read the fine print whenever going onto these sites. You almost always find that the actual copy of the site does not tell you about fees - you need to read terms of service and any documentation to know this. Most people, including myself, don't take the time to do that. And savvy website owners know this. Be sure to never give out your cell phone number for any reason. Don't give out your social security number or bank information, either. Never show any interest in receiving information from health insurance providers. Do your own research before joining any company, never pay any fee, and beware of anyone or any website that promises to make you rich. It won't happen
